THE D.C. CRIME BILL AND THE WAR ON CHOCOLATE CITY

  • Black Workers and Wellness Center 2500 Martin Luther King Junior Avenue Southeast Washington, DC, 20020 United States (map)

The "Secure DC" Crime Bill was passed unanimously by the DC Council's Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety. It will be voted on by the full council on January 23rd. This new legislation would allow police to detain and identify people for fare evasion, stop people for mask wearing if they believe they're "suspicious", and create "drug free zones" making it illegal to gather in certain areas for up to five days.

However, the bill provides no adequate solutions to address the root issues that lead to crime: poverty, addiction, food insecurity, inadequate housing, and capitalist exploitation. Instead, it gives the police more power to continue the war against Black working class people in Southeast DC.

Join PACA on 1/24 at 7pm ET to unpack the implications of the crime bill and discuss real solutions for community safety, including Community Control of the Police!
