Councilmember Brooke Pinto, Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, and Councilmember Anita Bonds announce a joint public oversight roundtable of the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety, the Committee of the Whole, and the Committee on Executive Administration and Labor on the Mayor’s “Districtwide Review of Violence Reduction Programs.” The roundtable will be on Monday, October 30, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. in Room 412 of the John A. Wilson Building.
As part of the District government’s response to the significant uptick in violent crime in the District, on May 15, 2023, Mayor Bowser issued Mayor’s Order 2023-061, titled “Districtwide Review of Violence Reduction Programs.”1 The Order directed the District’s deputy mayors to submit plans to the City Administrator regarding steps the District could take within their “cluster agencies” to improve programs aimed at violence prevention, intervention, and reduction in the District. Each deputy mayor was required to submit their respective plan to the City Administrator within 45 days after the effective date of the Order. This roundtable will focus on the results of this review and the steps taken by the executive to date to implement recommendations from the deputy mayors pursuant to the Order. The roundtable will also examine the District’s violence interruption programs and broader efforts to enhance coordination between government agencies and between government and community to reduce violent crime.
The Committees invite the public to testify. Those who wish to do so must register using the Council’s Hearing Management System at https://lims.dccouncil.gov/hearings by 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 27. Witnesses who represent organizations will have 5 minutes to speak. All others will have 3 minutes to speak. Witnesses will have the option to testify in person or virtually; witnesses should specify which option they are electing at the time they sign up to testify.
