Each year we recognize International Overdose Awareness Day by gathering in reverence for those lost and in celebration for the rich lives they led and we will continue to lead with them in our hearts.
Our 6th Annual Celebration of Life will be a Homecoming style dance event, in which we'll dance, have an activity or two, a raffle, construct an altar space and as they say 'eat, drink, and be merry’ (we'll have very light refreshments available and Peabody Heights Brewery has all the alcoholic and non-alcoholic treats you may want or need!).
WEAR WHATEVER YOU WANT! Don't let the idea of a homecoming outfit deter you. This is your chance to show up to a dance wearing whatever you want! Maybe you wanted to wear pants to a dance and you were forced into a dress, maybe you wanted to be a punk rock princex but ended up being a pretty in pink mermaid -- well guess what? Wear those pants! IT WAS NEVER A PHASE MOM -- be a punk rock/emo/scene kid! Dress to the 9's because it’s your first chance to do so since that wedding you went to in 2019! Or honor someone you've lost by wearing something of theirs or something you held near and dear. All will be accepted and embraced!
BRING ITEMS FOR THE ALTAR/MEMORIAL! Each year we hold time and create space for the people we're carrying with us in our hearts. This year will be the first in years that we can create a physical space together celebrating our loved ones. If you feel so inclined, you can bring something to contribute to the space. A picture of a loved one, maybe their favorite candy, maybe something of theirs you hold near and dear, whatever you'd like to create our collective altar/memorial space. We'll be asking people to place their items but not touch other peoples stuff (unless to move slightly) and there will be hand sanitizer near by. We'll start to break the space down at 8:50 at which point you can pick up your items to take home with you.
This will be our first time holding the event in person in 2 years and we're really excited to be in community with one another again! We will have a private room (room in between the arcade and bathrooms) that leads to the outside portion where Dj Jazzy Dave will be set up and then a tented area and non tented area, one of both of which will be our dance floor!
BHRC is still masking up as a policy and ask that y'all do the same whenever inside our private room part of the event (we'll have masks available, in case you need one). There will be plenty of hand sanitizer to go around as well!
