Baldwin House: Debt-Free Futures

Join Baldwin House for a Political Education Workshop on December 7th from 6:30pm to 8pm to hear about the power of cooperatives being debt-free and obtaining financial sovereignty. We will learn together and help cultivate a solidarity economy, explore what resources are available to us, and navigate new paths to make land stewardship led by Black and brown neighbors a more accessible and viable reality in DC and beyond.

During this workshop, we will:

  1. Share updates about where Baldwin House is currently and where we are headed in order to cultivate sustainable, accessible housing in DC.

  2. Learn more about the institutional systems in DC that were designed to foster tenant-owned projects as well as the crises that have challenged the viability of these projects over the past few decades.

  3. Strategize together to build a more resilient solidarity economy by exploring the resources available to us, building connections between them, and mapping out how to move resources in a just, nurturing way.

This call is part of our Debt-Free Futures campaign to explore and strategize how to lay down sustainable roots and invest in a debt-free future.

What is the Debt-Free Futures campaign?

Debt-Free Futures is our campaign to build a future for the Baldwin House Cooperative that is free from banks and traditional wealth-building which relies on perpetually increasing property values. Our goal is to raise another $2 million to pay off our bank loan by Juneteenth 2024—Baldwin House’s three-year anniversary. This means raising $500,000 by the end of 2023 and another $250,000 per month next year. We know this is a daunting task, but we have experienced the power of radical optimism that lies within our communities. This is how we are going to create long-term affordable housing, a debt-free future, and a supportive community resource.
