MEDIA LITERACY WORKSHOP
Everyone has their own idea of what reliable media looks like. Do you use social media to get most of your news or do you still subscribe to a newspaper? Either way, have you thought about how those news stories are created? Why one story gets told over another? Who controls the narrative? Were all the stakeholders represented? How much source checking do they do before they press post? We will explore these questions during the workshop.
In the workshop we will:
Unpack the ways local news is created
Learn to how to make mainstream media work for you
Deconstruct the way the local news reports on issues that affect our community
Understand when and why the news gets it wrong
Learn how to convince local news producers to pay attention to issues they normally ignore and include perspectives that they usually omit
You will leave the workshop with a plan for creating media that tells the stories that we want told in ways that represent our truths the way we want them represented.
Learn to Use the Media before it uses you!
Without attention from the mainstream media, it’s important that we tell our own stories and record our own events. With the help of Grassroots DC, these pieces can gain traction on social media reaching larger and larger audiences.
Have you ever spoken in front of the DC City Council? Fun fact– they only give you three minutes to talk. Most issues take longer than that to explain. With proper preparation we can become pros at elevator pitches that can be used for not just council testimonials but also for interviews with the mainstream media.
